What is a Neck Lift?

Ageing, weight loss, excessive sun exposure, and even hereditary factors influence the aspect of the skin on the neck. However, any changes at the level of the neck may offer noticeable results for patients who opt for this procedure.

If you lost a considerable amount of weight, you might be confronted with the aspect of a loss in elasticity around the neck area, including sagging skin, unwanted fat deposits, and vertical bands.

The aspect of the neck may not be altered completely with exercises or a special diet; plastic surgery is one method that may allow patients to address these areas of the neck.

The neck lift (platysmaplasty) is a plastic surgery designed to recontour the mandibular and neck area in order to suit the patient’s desired result, in line with the recommendations and expectations delivered by the surgeon.

How Is a Neck Lift Performed?

The neck lift (platysmaplasty) procedure is performed under general anaesthesia to prevent the patient from being conscious during the intervention.

The incisions required for the neck lift (platysmaplasty) intervention are placed in areas where they will be difficult (if not impossible) to be noticed – behind the ears, under the chin, and in the hairline. This means that the scars are generally well-hidden.

After Dr Hunt makes the incisions, the skin tissue is detached and pulled to create a firmer aspect. The excess skin is eliminated, and the incisions are sutured.

Why Patients Might Consider a Neck Lift Surgery (Platysmaplasty)

Neck lift surgery (platysmaplasty) is a common procedure, which can alter the general aspect of the neck and lower face. There are multiple reasons why a patient might consider undergoing this procedure, such as:

  • A change in the contours of the jaw area
  • Altering the general aspect of the face
  • Adresses the contours of the neck

Recovery after Surgery

The recovery period after neck lift (platysmaplasty) is highly dependent on the complexity of the procedure and you own healing pace. Bruising and swelling naturally occur after undergoing any surgical procedure, including a neck lift (platysmaplasty).

It is best to avoid strenuous physical activities during the first two weeks after a neck lift surgery (platysmaplasty). Here are more recommendations for the recovery period after neck surgery:

  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least two weeks
  • Avoid steam rooms, saunas, hot baths and pools for a few weeks
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated
  • Don’t massage the neck area
  • Avoid ample head movements

To avoid risks and complications that could occur during the recovery period make sure to follow Dr Hunt’s indications.

Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty) FAQs - Considering a neck lift (platysmaplasty)?

What's involved in the Neck TIghtening Surgery?

A number of procedures may be performed on their own or in combination in pursuit of your desired results:

– Liposuction to remove excess fat in the neck area. To do so, Dr Hunt wil make a small incision below your chin.
– Cervicoplasty to remove excess skin, achieved by making incisions behind the ears or under the chin.
– Platysmaplasty to tighten the platysma muscles that cause the drooping skin commonly known as a turkey neck or turkey wattle.

Will I have to return for post-operative care after neck surgery?

You’ll come to see Dr Hunt within the first week after your surgery, so that he can check you’re recovering well and remove all your sutures. You’ll then have regular follow up visits over the next year – at six weeks, six months and 12 months.

When can I resume my normal activities after Neck Surgery?

You should plan on minimal activity for at least the first 48 hours after your neck surgery.

Through the healing process, you should wear compression garment as close to 24 hours per day as possible, including while you sleep.

Swelling and bruising may continue for up to 10 days, so you need to take care of yourself and not overdo it during this time.

However after this, you should be able to resume all normal activities that do not require a heart rate of over 100 beats per minute. This rule applies until three weeks after your surgery.

Recovery from a neck lift is approximately two weeks. At that time, patients can usually return to work though they will most likely not be comfortable attending social functions such as a wedding until the six-week mark. Full contact sport is allowed at approximately the three-month mark.

When will I see the end result of a neck lift?

You may be able to see the full result of your neck and jaw just six weeks after your surgery.
