What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
Eyelid surgery is known in medical terms as blepharoplasty. It is a plastic surgery used to address the aspect of the eyelids for both men and women usually over 40 years old. In some cases, the procedure might be deemed necessary even sooner in life.
The surgery to address the eyelids aims to provide patient with an alteration in both the form and function of the eyelids. During the procedure, Dr Hunt aims to address any excess skin and fat tissue at the level of the superior and/ or inferior eyelids.
There are two types of blepharoplasty, upper eyelid and lower eyelid. The procedures can be performed either at the same time or separately, depending on the patient’s needs and specific characteristics.
How is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) done?
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is often performed with the patient under general anaesthesia.
The procedure can take 30 minutes or up to two hours, depending on the complexity of each case and whether the procedure is performed only on the upper and lower eyelids or both.
The incisions on the upper eyelids are performed along the creases of the eyelids, so they are generally quite hard to see. Fat and skin tissue is eliminated, and the incisions are sutured.
When it comes to the lower blepharoplasty, the incision is 1-2 mm lower than the eyelashes. If there is just fat tissue that needs to be excised, Dr Hunt might use just a transconjunctival incision – on the interior (inside) part of the eyelid. In this case, the incision is not visible at all after the surgery is performed.

Recovery after Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
The recovery period after eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is often of no more than two weeks. During this time, you can experience a certain level of swelling and even bruising at the level of the operated area. These are normal side effects of the procedure that subside on their own within the next days and weeks following the intervention.
It is recommended to avoid strenuous physical activities during these first two weeks after eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Sleep with your head elevated, and don’t bend your face forward. Here are more recommendations for the recovery period:
- Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least two weeks
- Keep the incisions site clean and dry at all times
- Avoid steam and heat getting directly in your face
- Don’t rub your eyelids
- Avoid makeup and skincare at the level of the incisions

What's involved in a Blepharoplasty - Eyelid Surgery?

Dr Hunt will discuss your eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) with you in detail during your personal consultation. However he performs all eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) under a local or general anaesthetic administered by one of his preferred aneathetists in the hospital of your choice.
Before beginning your surgery, Dr Hunt will mark his intended incision sites, following the natural lines and creases of your upper and lower eyelids. In some instances he may recommend working on your lower eyelid via tiny incision on the inside, which is known as transconjunctival blepharoplasty.
During surgery, Dr Hunt will remove any excess fat, skin and muscle from above and/or below the eye, before gluing the skin.
When can I go home after Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
Answer:
You can usually go home on the same day as your surgery. You should stay home for the rest of the day, with cold packs over your eyes to reduce any swelling or bruising. When you’re discharged, you’ll be given a prescription for pain medication and for an ointment to keep your eyes moist while you sleep.
Will I have to return for post-operative care?
Answer:
You’ll return to see Dr Hunt five days after your surgery, when he’ll remove the very fine sutures in your eyes. You’ll then have another follow-up visit a week later, so Dr Hunt can check on your progress and remove the remainder of your sutures.
How long will I be off work after Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
Answer:
You should plan on taking one to two weeks off work. You’ll have blurry vision for around a week after your surgery, and the swelling will usually subside within seven to 10 days.
When can I resume my normal activities?
Answer:
You’ll be swollen and bruised for between five and 10 days after surgery, and should take it easy and not over exert yourself until you’re fully healed. You’ll need to sleep with your head elevated on two pillows during this time.
When will I see the final results of the surgery?

It will generally take around three weeks to see the final result of your blepharoplasty.
