What Can a Deep Plane Facelift Do For You?
Dr Hunt’s preferred facelift technique is the Deep Plane facelift. Dr Hunt has specialised in, and has refined his techniques in deep plane facelifts over a number of years. A deep plane facelift delivers the most natural and long lasting results, and is now accepted as the “gold standard” in facial rejuvenation.
Natural Looking
Results
With a deep plane facelift, ligaments are tethered in order to achieve tension-free movement. This causes a natural lift throughout the face and neck area.
Longer Lasting
Results
Not only will patients enjoy a more youthful-looking face after a deep plane facelift, patients are also more likely to experience results that last much longer. The combination of subtle and lasting results is a win-win for most patients seeking to look and feel younger.
Faster
Recovery
With a deep plane facelift, layers of the skin, facial tissue, and muscle are often separated and pulled in different directions. Reduced trauma to the skin means a quicker, less painful healing process.
Wide Range of Treatment Areas
A deep plane facelift can address areas of the face that a traditional facelift isn’t able to improve. With this plastic surgery, patients will notice improvement in their mid-face, which is often only achieved by using fillers or fat grafting.

Dr Jeremy Hunt explains Facelifts
Are You Thinking of Getting a Facelift?
How is it Different From the Regular Facelift
In traditional face-lifting, the skin is lifted but the underlying SMAS is not lifted or supported which can create an unnatural tight stretched appearance to the face.
The Deep Plane technique which lifts the skin and muscle (SMAS) together as one unit and repositions all deep facial musculature is performed by less 5% of surgeons because it is a technically more difficult procedure even though the results are more rejuvenating and longer lasting by 10 years, on average.
How it Works
With a deep plane facelift, the surgeon operates under the muscle layer (SMAS) to release the ligaments tethering it. This release allows a more complete and tension-free (no tightness) repositioning of the muscle and skin to its original youthful position. This advanced surgical technique also provides an improvement of the “midface” area. Because the muscle is more thoroughly and completely released to be mobilized to a higher, more youthful position, the resulting rejuvenation is more radiant as it affects the highlights of the cheeks and cheekbones in a subtle but remarkable fashion. In comparison, a traditional facelift doesn’t treat sagged cheekbone and hollowed cheek areas, typically found in the aged face.
The surgery takes place under the muscle. The ligaments are released.
The muscle is then lifted and repositioned more freely and without tension or stretch.
The excess skin is then removed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a deep plane facelift?
A deep plane facelift helps improve sagging cheeks, hanging jowls and skin folds around the mouth. The technique delivers longer lasting and more effective results than a traditional facelift. It repositions the tissues underneath the supportive layer of the face instead of pulling the skin tight like a traditional facelift. Muscles and fat layers are released and moved as one large unit. The results can last 10 years or more.
What are the benefits of a deep plane facelift?
A deep plane facelift provides numerous benefits. There is less skin trauma because tissues aren’t being pulled in several directions as with traditional facelifts. Since the whole face can be lifted, there is greater definition to the jawline, neck and cheekbones. Patients who receive a deep plane facelift are less likely to need revision procedures. The results are more natural than traditional facelifts and there’s less chance of scarring.
How is it different from the regular facelift?
The SMAS facelift remains the most common facelift technique performed around the world. Typically a type of SMAS lift called a “SMAS plication lift” is performed. This is not a deep plane facelift. In this surgery, the skin is completely lifted off the SMAS and then sutures are placed within the SMAS to tighten it. This can give a very easily spotted look “like you had a facelift” and is readily seen in celebrities and newsreaders. Pulling on the SMAS gives better results than lifting the skin alone but a SMAS facelift can create a very tight look in the skin.
A SMAS facelift can really only effectively treat the lower face and jaw well. Drooping cheeks are often not well addressed. This means that some surgeons then perform fat grafting at the same time. This can make the cheeks seem overfilled as the underlying problem of descent of tissues has not been corrected. The deep plane technique repositions the saggy muscle and fat of the face back into its proper position as a continuous unit.
Who is a good candidate for deep plane facelift?
A deep plane facelift is ideal for men and women who are frustrated with signs of aging. This procedure is commonly performed on middle-aged and older adults starting to experience facial volume loss. A good candidate for a deep plane facelift will be in good overall health and a non-smoker. Smoking can slow down the body’s ability to heal and may interfere with achieving optimal results.
You can expect some bruising of some areas of the facial and neck skin for the first week after a deep plane facelift. Swelling of the face occurs the morning after surgery. The swelling will be significantly improved by 2 weeks but will continue to decrease in size over around 6 weeks.
The bruising and swelling from a deep plane facelift is much less than with a standard SMAS facelift. This is because the deep plane technique is performed in a natural tissue plane layer that does not usually have many blood vessels within it. In addition the attachments from the skin to the SMAS layer underneath it are left undisturbed for most of the face, again leading to less skin bruising and swelling. SMAS facelifts typically disrupt the attachments between the skin and SMAS.
Typically patients feel little to no pain after surgery. Head elevation and cold compresses can be helpful to assist with reducing swelling.
Does a deep plane facelift leave scars?
The deep plane facelift leaves the most hidden scars of any facelift surgery. Due to the fact that tissues are lifted in a deep layer, little to no tension is placed on the skin. This allows the skin edges to close together with almost no visible scarring. Scars will appear as very fine lines which are nearly imperceptible. Another key benefit is that this technique prevents the earlobes from being pulled downwards which can create a “pixie ear” deformity.
